Abstract
The essay discusses the concepts of soundscape and phonosphere and indicates the “historical urban phonosphere” as an object of musicological investigation: how a musical text performed in a given urban space is perceived and deciphered by the subjectivity of the listeners and tran lated into the idea of urban sound that they nurture and transmit. The intent is to subtract the perspective of soundscape studies from the study mainly of descriptions of sound events and bring it back to the study of musical texts in relation to the environmental conditions for which they were commissioned, created and performed.
