Abstract
The history of individual musical works is also made up of many threads that contextualise them: belonging to a genre, placement in the author’s biography, functionality, commissioning, comparison with similar contemporary works. The sound atmosphere in which they were born should not be forgotten, the background sound of the urban areas in which they were listened to. That atmosphere was made up of street music, occasions for music en plein air, but also musical experiences that overflowed into the open air from the closed spaces of churches and buildings. The contribution provides some sample cases.
