Abstract
The issue of mental distress among young people must be examined in light of increased knowledge of the specific dynamics of this age group, of global changes in inspirational models and contemporary psychosocial syndromes, of the emergence of new and widespread forms of psychopathology, and (from a psychodynamic point of view) of the subversion of classic difficulties caused by an excessive normative superego, which are now being replaced – in the “civilization of shame” and inadequacy – by the growing dominance of the narcissistic ideal, a new and violent parameter of the youth world. Schools are being severely tested by the impact of these epochal changes, but they remain both the basic place of education for growth and the place where psychological distress is actually recognized (much more than in the past) and communicated to parents and institutions for remedial purposes.
